Moving on! M E N U - P L A N N I N G.
I marshalled a few thoughts for some ladies on my home-making list and have reproduced them here for a wider, though obviously still extremely limited, blog audience. And I like it that way. I like YOU that way, dear readers. Small, wide and extremely limited. It makes me feel tall, slim and accomplished. (Please don't disabuse me of that notion.)
I think I must have written about this before and I don't want to bore people, but what the heck.
Advantages:
Advantages:
Menu-planning means I always have the items on hand and don't have to quickly nip to the shop (by car) for the things I've forgotten or suddenly discover I don't have. (Saves money and time.)
It means I can balance out the nutrients, making sure we have enough of certain things and not too much of others. (Better nutrition for my family.)
Less wastage. No throwing away the slimy green beans at the bottom of my veg drawer in the fridge. I won't have forgotten that I had them because they were planned to be there and planned to be consumed whilst still fresh. (Saving money and better nutrition.)
Once I started menu planning I found I was,
a) better organised in terms of meal prep
b) more inclined to invite others over for a meal (hospitality? Tick!)
b) saving money which could then be used to budget for hospitality.
Disadvantages:
Ummmm, none?
Well, alright, it takes time to plan, think things through and sometimes I don't feel like it. {vbg}
We (okay, I) fall off the wagon from time to time and I find we then start to eat pre-packaged food more, which is more expensive and less nutritious and then my kids get used to the taste of the junkier types of food again. Which is not good. And then we all get colds because we're not getting enough vitamins. {g} And I feel tired and whiny. And less like meal planning.
SOOOOOOOO!
Time to climb back onto the wagon.
The way I do it.
Get a nice cup of tea and sit under a blanket on the sofa because it's raining again, with my favourite recipes spread all over. Ask everyone what their most favourite meals are. Make sure I incorporate some of those over the next month. Look at my diary to see what we are doing and where we're supposed to be going over the next month. Plan for simple meals on busy days. Try to have an orange/red veg or fruit 2-3 times a week, a cabbage family member (broccoli, cabbage, kale cauliflower etc) once a week, a green leafy veg twice a week etc. I try to get at least 3 portions of veg into a dinner if I can, because we are all pretty bad at eating the 5 portions a day unless I plan for it. In the winter, we'll have soup once a week. We have chicken once a week and fish once a week or every 2 weeks, the rest are vegetarian meals, based on nuts/seeds, beans, lentils, rice or pasta. We are currently trying not to have cheese every day as that has been a bad habit.
Pretty soon the month's list of meals has been filled in. I try to double cook some of the meals so that the extra can go in the freezer and be available for either extra guests or on a day I can't be bothered to cook.
Then I'll email a few friends (I'm afraid of the phone) and try to get people over for a few meals during the course of the month. Very rarely, we get invited to others' houses for meals, but so rarely that I don't factor it in or anything. I've given up being sad about this.
Resources I've used over the years were: a great yahoo group which is no longer in existence {sniff!}, various books by Emilie Barnes and also Hillbilly Housewife's section on menu-planning. He new site is Frugal Abundance and I'll let you check those out using google! I'd do it but I don't have time because I have to get a cup of tea and climb under a blanket now.
Hope that helps.

Dorothy,
I'm coming to you esp for prayers - why? Because you're English. You wonder what that means.... well Abigail has callbacks tonight for A Christmas Carol and it's set in England and you're English..... well so you see the connection.... Abigail would LOVE a part in this show.... and she has a pretty good accent (must be from that one week in London when she was in Kindergarten)
Thanks for posting this, Dorothy. I have attempted this - very poorly - over the last few months. When I do it, it works great. When I don't....well it doesn't. ;-) Off to do some more menu planning before I head off to get groceries for the week.
Thanks for sharing this with us your small devoted audience! :o) I plan meals now too (though I don't always stick to the plan) But I have to do it weekly because we have so much chaos happening around here I have no idea what is happening a month in advance! A week is a bit ambitious sometimes - LOL! Anyway, I've also found it helpful to plan the lunches and breakfast too. I found that I was OK for dinner because it was planned and then would stand around scratching my head for lunch because I forgot to make sure we had anything in. (cheese sandwiches get old really fast!)
Thanks for clearing up the wedding photo.... it had been puzzling me :)
I menu plan for all those reasons (albeit without the cup of tea) but also so that family/friends can pick up the menu plans if I'm not around for whatever reason.
Ps. I tagged you on my blog:

I just got back to menu planning after lapsing over the summer - you are right, it makes a big difference. Though even with planning mine never seems to be simple as I have to juggle carnivorous non-cheese eating husband, vegetarian daughter, dance classes at inconvenient times, and the general inability of my family to all eat the same thing. Grrr! About the only meal every single person will eat is fish fingers and chips. If four people love something, you can bet the fifth will loathe it. Excuse me while I scream ... aarghhh!!!!!
Loving all things vintage, I hope you don't mind if I save your 1880's lady to my computer. I'd love to use it later, with proper credit of course.
Ack, planning...I'm afraid I fail at planning. My meals plans are rather amorphous, and meals are from the hip. I'm thankful for my More-With-Less cookbook, Hillbilly Housewife and Tammy's recipes. Every once in a while I'll use Allrecipes.com's ingredient search if I'm desperate to use up something.
From the meals that you have posted, I can tell you are much more diverse and creative than I am in the kitchen. I would love to get more motivated to cook more creative vegetable dishes.
Ironic you would post on this topic and I'd read it today. I've been thinking on this topic the past few days. It came up at Mom's NIght out on MOnday night, it came up at PWOC last night and now I read it this a.m. right HERE.
I really need to get back to menu planning, baking, and get a few items in the freezer. Life is so much more nutritious when I get those ducks in a row......the past few weeks have been taken up with establishing a school/bible study/fall routine....but its time to re-evaluate THIS aspect before the holidays are upon us.
Thanks for yet another gentle nudge......it's time. LOL
Like DeEtta mentioned, I've also been thinking about trying to plan a few meals here and there. I always start thinking about doing this when our freezer meals have run out so it's time!
And, you KNOW you're welcome for dinner here anytime! Wish you lived closer!
Kathryn, I do NOT envy you your planning sessions!
Alexandra, I can't remember where I got the lady, but I'm pretty sure it would be out of copyright by now.
DeEtta, it's finding the time to get started again after a break that's the hardest!
I can't seem to get in to menu planning, as much as I know I should.
You are hearby invited to my house for dinner...a week from Friday. No idea what the menu will be.
Well, the hair in both photos look somewhat similar, but I don't think you wear a white dress (or a kilt) while cooking!
I go in and out of meal planning. I've been on a good stretch now for over a year. Lisa in Jax was the final push to get me planning on my blog, and it helps now that I must either be prepared or drive into town 9 miles. (g)
Your planning sounds much more detailed than mine though. I curl up in front of my computer and usually plan it out when I'm making my Weekly Menu post.
We've not had much success having friends over for dinner--at first we were concerned (wondering if it was personal!) but we have realized it's daunting to ask the "city folk" to drive an hour-plus to a place they've never heard of, not to mention juggling work schedules and the cost of gas.... However, we were guests recently, which was lovely and much appreciated!
