What a bizarre idea.
So, I'm eating spinach salad and scrambled eggs for breakfast, when I'm used to a bowl of weetabix with milk and a banana.
I'm having a HUGE mixed salad with smoked mackerel for lunch, instead of a cheese and tomato sandwhich and an apple.
And Tuscan Bean soup, with no bread, for dinner, with a handful of nuts for a snack, instead of say, pasta with veg and cheese and bread.
Is it really going to make that much difference?
I am slightly hungrier but not much. I am still craving dairy products, and the cereals which always filled me up, like rice, pasta, even oatcakes as a snack. It's pretty rough. This is day four and I've exercised for 30-40 minutes each day. When shall I weigh myself and expect a result? LOL! I need FAST results or I will give up, I fear.
Just to reward myself, today I am going for a mammogram. Woopee! :-( That's Advanced Decrepitude for you. Diets, reading glasses, sore joints and mammograms. Without even the blessings of grandchildren! It seems a little unfair to me.
Whine, whiney, whine, whine.
Oh, and I'm not allowed any wine, either.
Or orange juice.
Or even a flippin grape.
Keep me going, friends!

O Dorothy! Sounds very funny! I really hope it works for you. Definitely only weigh once a week, same day and time each week, as we weigh different every day. I admire you doing something so very different to what you normally do... for me, I cannot do anything that involves 'giving up' things I really like as then I crave them all the more! My weight had got to an awful stage Aug last year, have comfort ate my way through a number of years... I knew I had to do something, but wasn't disciplined on my own so opted for Weight Watchers... it's not cheap :o( but for me it means I don't deny myself anything, just learn about portion sizes and controlling myself. I think it will be a long haul for me (have lost 31 lb in about 5 months, but same again to go!) but then it was put on over a good period of time. Anyway, hope you get the results you desire... don't give up! persevere!
You are a braver woman than me. I couldn't do it!
I must say your regular meals don't sound unhealthy. I hope this diet works for you
I lost my most weight around this time a few years ago because I gave up things for Lent. For me, it is easier to stay committed to a sacrifice when I know I have promised God! I can cheat on myself easier than I can God. :-)
Anyway, good luck. I have already fallen off the bandwagon of counting calories and exercising that I started in January. Sickness and stress are my excuse. Need to stop making excuses and just do it!
Don't forget that if you gain at first, it can be muscle weight. Don't let that discourage you from keeping at it.
I sympathize with everything but the diet. I have given up on diets! :) Had the mammogram a couple of weeks ago and the annual gyn exam last week. Fun!
Esther, 31 pounds?!!!!Way/weigh to go!!!!! LOL! This diet claims you lose 14 pounds in the first two weeks, which I find very hard to believe given the amount of fat I seem to be consuming.
Renee, I don't think our normal family diet is too unhealthy either. Grace and Jamie stay remarkably slim on it. Jack eats loads of additional carbs I assume because he's an active (running or gym every day) teenage boy, so he can get away with it. But apparently, I can't. LOL!
Jen, I'll try and remember that about the muscle.
Linda, I'm just back from the screening appointment and I SO want to comfort eat....I guess I'll have my 15 nuts...Of course a bag of peanut M'n'M's would do the trick but I don't have any in the house.LOL!
Go, Dorothy Go! Your menu looks excellent. I loose with more salads and veggies than carbs, and take it easy on the cheese. I think you can eventually do low sugar fruits like blueberries or raspberries...can't remember exactly, but there are a few. I did a version of your diet about six years ago and lost 25 pounds...then I got pregnant with my daughter, and it came back, and stayed back. ;)
I can't do a low carb diet again because of gallbladder issues, or rather a lack of a gallbladder. ;) The fats just don't agree with me.
Keep going at it Dorothy, at least it doesn't sound like too bad a diet compared to some.
Yes leave on Sunday morning. A bit apprehensive about how will Dad will be and look after all his treatment, but hopefully it will be good news. I am SO looking forward to the break, it has been a rather stressful few weeks.
I've never tried a "diet", always stuck with eating healthily... worked for the first 40lbs, it's just stayed there for the last two years coming up to three :sigh:
Oh - and you can have a whine every meal feel free :)
oh, I stand in awe.
I cannot diet to save my life. Irony intended. Honestly, I am rubbish. I forget, I do honestly, I'm half way through my third digestive and then I think 'oh heck, I was meant to be dieting'. This is also advanced decrepitude, it is related to 'what did I come up here for?' syndrome. Eventually, if you suffer from both badly enough, in theory (though not in practice) they balance each other out.
I so need to lose weight.
You are a hero, Dorothy, make no mistake.
Dorothy,
I'm a little behind with your posts, but I just wanted to give you my vote of confidence on your weight loss adventure. I'm doing the same thing, but losing weight is the bonus--I'm just trying to reduce cholesterol (so I don't have to take medicine) and keep my sodium levels down enough not to cause a heart attack. I'm exercising 45 minutes a day using the balance board from Wii Fit. I don't even plug it in...I just keep stepping for 45 minutes while I watch an episode of All Creatures Great and Small :) I then journal my activity in the Wii Fit program. Our eliptical machine arrived 2 weeks ago but it was missing the wires needed to use it, so we're waiting for them to arrive. The stepping doesn't seem to really get my heart rate up high enough to cause a good sweat, but it's certainly doing something to my calves!
I have to agree with another person on this comment list--your previous diet just didn't seem to be unhealthy. Here's a question for you, do you think you want to keep eating the way you are now for the rest of your life? If not, (and who would?) maybe it's not so much your diet that needs to be changed but trying to reduce salt and excess fat in your diet choices. Here's why I think this is the best diet plan: You wake up in the morning and your first thought isn't, What CAN'T I have to eat today? According to my doctor, bread is good stuff for you :) Don't over do it but give your body that nice slice of wheat bread once a day. Even enjoy a small bowl of fat-free ice cream. I've also had to come to grips with this fact--my body has chosen to use those new saggy bits as a good fat storage container. It makes me sad, but I don't know of many ways to exercise my neck, if you know what I mean. LOL! Be healthy, but don't be yourself up over weight gain these last years. If we were standing in front of Botticelli (sp) he would want to capture those bulgy bits on canvas ;)
Well, if you have to sacrifice pasta and bread, and eat loads of spinach, you may as well just throw that mammogram in there too! What a party week!
I did a modified diet/lifestyle change similar to South Beach several years ago. I wasn't trying to lose weight but to be healthier. The advantage was that I did lose weight; I did get healthier. I still watch my carbs (as long as you don't count ice cream in there), but I haven't exercised regularly in two years. Ah well. It will happen again, I'm sure . . .
I wish you would have posted more on this, so I could see if the strict no carb regiment early on was effective. I'm curious to know if it worked as well for you!
I agree. It is all TERRIBLY unfair! I'm fighting this whole aging thing something fierce!
