A Day of Whacky Science

Jack is away at sports camp, more of which in a future post, but that means I had 3 spare places in the car when I took Grace off to Aylesbury for a Day of Whacky Science for home-schooled kids. Cool. Anything dangerous or gory makes science interesting!

So, I took 3 local friends, two of whom are 12 year old boys. This is the conversation I heard on the way to the car.

'I hear there's going to be explosions!'
'Yeah and I heard we're going to cut up dead animals!'
'Explosions and blood! Sounds like a perfect day!'
{Contented sigh} 'Yeah!'

My friend Marcia has 2 sons who are aeronautical engineers and one of them has a girlfriend who's a high school science teacher. They both gave up a day's holiday to come and help us with some interesting experiments.

Well, they started off by blowing *up* bubbles. I was out at the shop buying myself some crisps so I missed that. Thankfully. But I came back in time to watch Grace set fire to a sparkler she'd just made. It worked pretty well, though the photo doesn't show that.
But it was okay because they also made their own fire extinguishers!Which involved the use of hydrochloric Acid. Now, normally, I try to keep Grace and Hydrochloric Acid in separate rooms.
But, oh, what the heck! Another successful experiment! They just put out a fire!
A lemonade Fountain! You have to make slime on days like these! And rockets of course! Who better to explain thrust, velocity, lift, drag etc than someone who works in the aerospace industry. It all went over my head though, because I spent every double Physics lesson in the sick room for 5 years. No one ever figured it out even though I always 'fainted' during Thursday morning assemblies!

I hated Physics. Physics was my nemesis.

Here we go with the prototype!
And here's the one Grace's team designed. It's OK. It didn't hit Anneka the teacher!
What goes up must come down. I think that's Physics.
Or interest rates or something.

Grace has a front row seat for the 'sticking one's finger down the pig's trachea show'. The dissected its heart and lungs which I'm sure was very educational. I was outside getting some fresh air.

Oh, now it's time for the horses' eyeballs. Nothing like a bag of horses' eyeballs after lunch!

Grace used a scalpel to dissect that too, but it was a bit squidgey. Sorry, have you had your lunch yet?

Meanwhile George supervised the extraction of DNA from Kiwifruit for the more squeamish students.Home Ed Science Days are evidently so romantic that George proposed to Anneka that evening. They are getting married in December. Aaahhh!

That's science for you!

THIS looks like fun. A whole day of science fun. How often are they scheduled? I wonder if someone around here would do that. Do you pay a fee to attend?

It WAS fun!

This was the first one quite like this that we'd arranged. We paid £15 per child which included all the materials, hall hire and *insurance*!!!!

How fun! I love, love, love science.

What a good variety of different activites.

What a wonderful day of science. Much more hands on and exciting than what they do in school now, of that I am sure! Please let me know if you ever organise another one.

My goodness, that was SOME day of science. Who planned and coordinated it all? Looks like some work in getting it organized but wow, what a great look into several different science fields.

That's not a bad price until one has to pay for five children; that would cost me $150+ (I believe that's the current exchange rate). Looks like it was a great day of fun

Yes Renee, but you have to remember that families as large as that are *rare* here these days.It was for aged 11 and up anyway, so hopefully, all who wanted to come were able to.

Also, some Home-ed groups will have schemes that offer reduced cost for the 3rd and subsequent child, which helps too!

The biggest single cost for the day was the insurance, apparently!

WOW. You guys really touched on many different aspects of science all in one day. How nice of those guys to give up some time to come and teach the kids.

Love the comparison between interest rates and physics (LOL)...

and... "that's science for you".... about someone getting proposing.... chemistry, I'm sure (LOL)!

Looks like fun! We're just about to begin dissections for our Biology in the next month or so.

See, this is one I read but didn't post on. LOL Sorry about that.

I wanted to say that it looks like a TON of fun & I wish we could get something like this together. Well, maybe minus the gore part. I would have liked the blowing up part though. LOL This being said by a mom of three boys. :-)
