I guess you can be too 'real' in a blog post! {g} Reading it back, I did sound miserable. I think it was the diagnosis of a degenerative bone disease on top of all my other stresses that tipped me over the edge yesterday. Sorry about that.
So, I managed to use the gym yesterday and still walk out!!!!!
YAY! (I had to limp out last week due to the bad hip completely going.) I figured out that it was the rowing machine that was the culprit so avoided that one. Also, the doctor had told me NOT to use the treadmill so I didn't. But he also said I needed to build strength in my thigh muscles in order to reduce wear and pain in my hip. Well, that's not easy Mr Dr.
I managed 15 minutes bike, 15 mins cross trainer and 15 minutes upper body weights machines. I attempted some leg curls but started to worry about the hip giving way. I suspect I could gradually build those next time. Then some ab crunches. My poor abs. They look as though they've just given birth.
But I was so bouyed up in triumph as I WALKED out of the gym that I bought a bar of chocolate. I guess I was so relieved that I CAN exercise with osteo-arthritis I felt a little giddy.
I also managed to complete a lot of my to do list which made me practically euphoric!
Last night, I still needed painkillers in order to sleep but I'm beginning to feel a little less frightened by the OA dx.

I hear you, Dorothy. I have a very positive story about exercises to improve pain. I have arthritis in my spine (along with Scoliosis). I deal with chronic pain. I began doing some very simple exercises to strengthen my lower back and everything attached there and some stretches to elongate the ligaments running to my hips. I'm amazed to report that it's improved my pain by about 40 to 50%. I feel much better. Not perfect, but better. Surgery is definitely in the future, but I try not to think about it. It's an exercise in trusting the Lord...
So glad today was a better day! A couple of years ago I was having problems with my knee and exercise helped that a lot. Only snag is that I have stopped exercising and the dodgy knee has come back - back to the gym time, I think!
I try not to look at my abs they are that scarey, so you've got one on me there.
Will you get more specific exercises for your arthritis? People keep saying that Trevor will get arthritis in his thigh/hip at a young age because of his injury. (not the doctor just about everyone else) I'm not sure if that's true but it made me wonder if you were injured in that area when you were younger? I hope that it will improve over time and you won't have pain.
Good job on working out, Dorothy! You can do it!! Just don't look too closely at those abs. I try to ignore mine as much as possible.
Don't worry about fussing and crying and whining on the blog, that's partly what it's for. Be real!! We are here to support and encourage each other.
Way to go. About 1 1/2 years ago the docs told me I had OA when I couldn't hold Stacia, a pen etc. I also didn't walk real well.....now they aren't sure what to tell me as I'm doing so well....I slowly started working out and it really does seem to have helped. Keep it up.
