Beccy and our Weekend

Grace's best friend Beccy came to stay for the weekend. Jamie took the kids and picked up James, Jack's friend, and went off to a nearby town to meet Beccy whom her Dad dropped off. They went bowling and shopping. Grace and Jack find shopping a real bore unfortunately, even when they have money to spend and it's a nice mall. But the other kids had fun. They had lunch while they were out and came back late afternoon.

We had our special Saturday night meal and it was lovely to chat to Beccy who is becoming a wonderful young woman. Grace has known her since the first day at school they both endured together. Of course, Grace left school a few months later, but Beccy carried on and is doing very well. She is currently applying to go to the London School of Fashion in September and I don't doubt that she will make the grade.

When Beccy was 8 years old she decided she wanted to be baptised and asked me if I would be her Godmother. It was such a privilege and it has been great to be able to talk with her about her faith over the years.

The kids watched Pirates of the Caribbean 2, played games and listened to music.

On Sunday Jamie was playing music, so I dropped him off early at church. We went in later. Afterwards we had leftovers for lunch. More film-watching, music and board games until it was time for Jamie to drive Beccy home.

Jamie spent all his free time planning a workshop for musicians on Tuesday and the music for church next weekend. He still has a 1/2 day's holiday from work to take from last year, so he's going in to work late today as it's Jack's birthday!

Dorothy--great pictures! Nice the kids got in some friend time over the weekend. You really should join us on the Project 365 and start posting a picture a day. It's fun!

Happy Birthday Jack! Cute picture of the girls too! D, can I ask a question? How does high school work over in your neck of the woods? Do you have the standard 12 grades...then college? Since you mentioned Beccy applying to the London School of Fashion, I'm curious. : ) ~Yvonne

Yvonne,

We have 13 years of formal education here but only the first 11 are compulsory. At 16 you can leave school either to work, or to go on to further education elsewhere.

At school there are two layers of public examinations, at 16, when you could sit exams in up to 12 or so subjects. At 18, you'll have specialised down to 3-4 subjects and sit another layer of exams. This is the academic track you'd be on if planning on going on to university.

B is going to be doing National Vocational Qualifications (hoping for LSF) in Fashion as this is what she wants to do with her life. There are other vocational qualifications also which prepare you for employment in specific fields, whilst also continuing with English, Maths and IT (computers).

Of course, if you are home-schooling it's all completely different. More difficult to sit those exams and scarier for the parent.

Happy Birthday Jack! My birthday is today the 9th . . . sounds like his day was fun and full of activities. Speaking of teenagers - I have 3 in the house at this time . . .they sure make life exciting!
