A Blog Entry to Embarrass Windy

The other day, we went to visit our friends, Windy and her children, on the American base. I love going to visit her. Though she always apologises about the state of her house, compared to mine it is a palace. A palace that gets cleaned by an army of flunkies. I don't know how she does it. And she's 13 months pregnant at the moment. Maybe 14. I don't know, just a guess.

I forgot to take a picture of her. Actually, that's not true. I deliberately didn't take a picture of her in case she asked someone to take a picture of us together and I was having a bad face day. That's like a bad hair day, only worse.

The first time I brought the kids on base, I gave them a strict talking-to about manners and behaviour when you are in a foreign country. (That's what it's like, driving through those gates.) When the children all went off to the park alone to play I gave strict instructions about being polite and fitting in. (You have to do this, with a boisterous boy and a socially awkward girl with ASD.) At 4.00, some patriotic military-type song was unexpectedly (to us) played through loudspeakers all over the base.

All the kids in the park stopped playing and stood still with their hands over their hearts. My kids had never encountered anything like this before. My heart skipped a beat when Jack and Grace told me about this on the way home. What did you do? I asked, afraid that they had disgraced themselves in some cultural faux-pas. 'We did the same thing, of course.' I laughed. They were such good little Americans. {LOL!}

This time, the big kids played a board game and Miss Maggie snuck in there towards the end. Maggie is extremely adorable and cheeky. She danced for us all when we arrived. She has an equally adorable toddler brother but the photo came out all blurry, so I couldn't print it.

Windy is always apologising for things, like having to cancel our get-togethers when her children are unwell, the state of her house, not having time to bake cookies, turning up unannounced at our house because her son has vomited in the back of the car and we were the only people she knew for miles where she could come for water and paper towels. {vbg} Hey, we don't mind and it was a privilege to help!

She has taught me so much since we've known eachother, about forgiveness and family, friendship and reliance on God during trials. I don't think she knows how precious our friendship is to me. She's a delight. I know that the Air Force will take her away to her next adventure soon, but I'm trying not to think about that at the moment.

Dearest Dorothy,
You funny, sweet friend! What are you trying to do to me?? Let me paint the scene for you...

I had finally gotten Miss Maggie tucked into bed (a ritual that lasts no less than 45 minutes) and realized I needed a little energy food. I waddled down to the kitchen and warmed up a bit of left-over lasagna. I then delicately sat myself in front of my computer (extra-ordinarily pregnant women have to be mindful of balancing a hot plate of food any where near electronic equipment!) with the intention to catch up a bit with my very favorite blog. When, to my surprise! I saw an entry that looked like it said my name. Wait! It WAS my name! I scrolled quickly down the screen and recognized my dining room...children...and two teenagers who looked remarkably american. Whoa--there was my Christmas tree! (Thank you Lord that the floor in front of the tree was picked up.)

I confess that I was so surprised to find a blog entry about me that I even forgot about my lasagna (a VERY difficult feat considering the forkful of tasty pasta had been hovering in front of my face) Then, I read the blog text. Tears, tissues, lasagna and a family very alarmed that I was going into labor. Not a pretty picture, I assure you!

Nevertheless, after I was able to point (with my fork) to the blog, all was understood and my husband sweetly said, "Take a look at that! You guys played "Life" (the board game) without me!" Thus ended the tears and I lovingly told my husband to "Go away, I want to read this again."

Dorothy, it is SO nice to have a friend who not only says such nice things about me, but who also has the perfect politeness to wait until I'm in the bathroom before taking rapid shots of my home!
I love you, my sister-in-Christ!

Ah, Dorothy, sounds like you have been blessed with a lifelong friend in Windy, no matter where she lives! And I have no doubt she's been blessed with the same in you!
