Hello and Bonjour!
I have a problem which I need a kind Canadian to answer.
I need to show proof of identity for Jack to enter him into the public exams he's taking this summer. His passports are both expired. Ooops! A birth certificate is the other proof which is acceptable.
So, I ventured into the loft, on a very rickety ladder I might add, to search out the Important Documents files. I nearly slipped and grabbed hold of a beam for support and the stupid beam had a stupid nail sticking out from it so I now have a hole in my hand. And eeeeekkk! I don't seem to have a Birth Certificate for Jack!
He WAS born. I am sure of that (3 days' labour and in a blizzard to boot.) However, I could only find something which said it was a 'Certified A True Photostatic Print of a Record' of a Statement of Live Birth.
I don't remember actually receiving what looks like Grace's (born in the UK) Birth Certificate.
So, my question is, 'Is this all I was given?' Or have I lost some other thing, called a 'Birth Certificate'?
Help!
Merci!

I don't live in Canada although 25% of my ancestors do. The one you have says "certified" so it's probably official. Is there an ink signature and/or a raised seal of some sort?
Of my five children, four have nice certificates but the one from GA is regular computer paper with the raised seal and a signature (no swirly border, no color)
Here is a page about birth certificates in Canada
Dorothy,
From what I recall, you leave the hospital with a Statement of Live Birth. With that information, you then send away for a Birth Cert which arrives sometime thereafter. You're dealing with the gov't, so their '6-8 weeks' could be 2 weeks or two years.
Was he born in Ontario? Try here: https://www.orgforms.gov.on.ca/eForms/start.do <--that is the office of the Registrar General. I believe this is a provincial matter, not federal, so you deal with the R.G. in the province of birth.
I'll help more if you need. Drop me a msg and I'll send you my personal email.
Thanks Bonni. I think what I have is a certified copy of birth registration. I'm pretty sure that it was this which was used to obtain his Canadian passport. Do you have passports for your children? Do you remember what paperwork was required?
Yes, it was Ontario. It looks like I'll have to order a birth certificate, but it may not arrive in time. I wonder if it would be quicker to try to renew one of his his passports. Aaargh!
Dorothy,
Have you tried looking online for a pic of what an Ontario Birth Registration looks like? Or have you tried emailing the govt office giving them the exact name of what you have to see if it's official? Since it says "certified" it sounds very official
Praying that it can be easily sorted. I'm guessing that renewing the passport might possibly be quicker.
