Presenting Abingdon

We spent the recent Bank Holiday exploring a new (to us) town in Oxfordshire.
Abingdon is apparently the oldest continuously inhabited town in Britain. Not the world, that would be Damascus.
Under the Town Hall.

The doorway of an old school.

Sign on the Almshouses.

Boats for hire! The old town gaol in the background has been bought by developers to convert into appartments. You what? Bars on the wondows aren't really my cup of tea.

Pleasure craft on the Thames.

The Almshouses, some still inhabited by industrious, sober and deserving poor!

Yes, that's the same Thames that runs through London.

Next time we'll hire a boat and explore further!

Lovely town, lovely architecture.

I admire how you always manage to get away for holidays and visit these places! I wish that was something that dh and I did more often!

Great face on Jack, and it cracks me up that you blogged it!

Kristine,

It's a British tradition for families to 'go for a drive' on a Bank Holiday Monday. We decided to explore a town that was new to us. Though apparently, very old! {g}

I sense though that the kids will not be coming with us on these drives for too much longer! You tend to outgrow such traditions around late teenagehood. {g}

I love this tradition. We used to drive more - but here well.....it seems no matter how far we drive the scenery stays the same....I need to start promoting more outings..... You've inspired me.

thanks for sharing all these glimpses into your countryside. I love it.
