Hi all,
We've decided to re-institute Pizza and Movie night once a week, which we always used to have when they were younger. They're both very keen and I'm keen to keep them happy at home on a Friday night for as long as I can! I'd love it if they started inviting friends over for Pizza and Movie night, and have grand visions of it becoming a neighbourhood (wholesome) tradition. As opposed to hanging round bus shelters, drinking and smoking, which seems to be a teen preoccupation in our town.
To this end, does anyone have any recommendations for films? Now this is not as easy as it sounds because we don't have any little kids any more. Here's the family profile:
Grace~ 17 1/2 Likes Chick Flicks or teen flicks. Faves are Titanic and Freaky Friday.
Jack~ 14 1/2 likes action, can cope with some violence. Faves are LOTR trilogy and Bourne/Bond type films.
Jamie ~ mid forties likes sci-fi, action blockbusters, mysteries, wouldn't HATE chick flicks but doesn't want a constant diet of them.
Moi~ old, very, very old. I love complicated plots, costume dramas, old Italian and French movies, anything that's not predictable or Hollywood. Eg The Weeping Camel, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Rabbit Proof Fence. (Um, though they aren't all about animals!!!)
See my problem? LOL! Actually, we all compromise pretty well and all of us have enjoyed all the movies mentioned. I think that's part of the deal really, that when it's not a film that's obviously *us* we can still watch, enjoy and happily critique later! {g}
I'd LOVE some suggestions of films that you think we might all (or even just some of us) enjoy!!!! What have you and your teens both watched and enjoyed lately?

We don't have teens, but we recently watched 'Bucket List' and found it funny, exciting and thought provoking at the same time. You could also visit some oldies but goodies. Last night we watched 'Back to the Future' and had a great time laughing our heads off and shouting 'Oh this is when they.........!!' Have fun with this. Ours are still little and we do this each week, though our usual fair is more like 'Peter Pan' and 'Cars'! :o)
I'll try to think of some that we've all liked here since we all have very different tastes too.
Daddy Day Care, this makes us laugh every time.
Ice Age and Chicken little, cartoons yes but seemed to be funny for the olders as well. They both make me laugh and I don't really like movies and really really don't like cartoons.
Nims Island
Nanny McPhee
Snow Buddies
Mr. Bean's holiday
The astronaut farmer
Night at the museum
Chestnut hero of central park
Close encounters of the third kind
How to eat fried worms
Eight below
Willie Wonka
Flightplan
Secondhand lions
Dinotopia
Two brothers
Holes
Far from Home- the adventures of yellow dog
Stargate
Are we there yet
Eragon
I guess that's enough. I was looking through my "previously rented" list at netflix and picking out the ones that jumped out at me as ones everyone seemed to like!
Office Space is funny in an off-beat way, but some bad language.
Another off-beat movie, but very funny - Local Hero filmed in Scotland. One mild comedic sexual frolic with no skin(that I can remember).
Maybe some old classic? Black and whites with the big stars like All About Eve.
Then there is always inspirational historical fiction - tons of those available.

I saw a Chinese movie which was wonderful- Long Road Home. It's wholesome and edifying.
Love Comes Softly is a heartwarming wholesome Christian movie. It a chic flick, sorta', and it's a part of a series.
Hmmm! We are more for teen flicks (which tend to merge into each other in my brain) than action movies round here. What about some of the classic war films like The Great Escape and A Bridge Too Far? The version of Pride and Prejudice that was out two or three years ago was funny enough for my non-literary daughter to enjoy it. Groundhog Day? Sorry, brain's a blank and can't think of anything else.
No suggestions, but I love the idea! Movie night sounds great. If you invite kids over be sure to stock up on inexpensive snacks because I've found kids that age can literally eat you out of house and home!
meant to add that our dd attends a youth group that meets 2x a month. They are watching the Truth Project. If you want a discussion type movie night that might be a good choice for you. Anyway. The parents who host the movie night have the parents in charge of treats that night bring two - healthy snack foods to be devoured while watching the movie and a sweet treat to devour while socializing (LOL)! I can never get over how much they eat. No matter how many snacks I take they are always completely gone!
Big Fish is a great movie, adventure and romance
Second hand lion is an amazing movie with a bit of everything. A group of girls ages 10-18 all went to see it and loved it.
Night at the museum is hilarious
that's all i can think of right now.
We find tv series quite fun (and shorter so it isn't too long to be bored...) as an alternative.
Movies that we've watched that we've enjoyed:
Miss Potter (yes even Ewok, Wookie wasn't around)
March of the Penguins
Sahara (bit of violence that makes me cringe but everyone else coped)
Some of the disney - Finding Nemo & Toy Story for example are great fun.
We've just received "A Lion in Winter" to go with our history studies I'll have to report back.
Oh we liked Second Hand Lions as well.
I'm wondering if there is a kind of Kung Fu Beatrix Potter in the pipeline?
That might work :0)

We've done pizza and movies every Friday night for years.....we've recently run into snags. It's getting hard to find movies that the older boys (19,17,14) will enjoy, that Arielle (11.5) and I will enjoy and that will capture the interest of the littles. I gave up a few weeks ago and told Mike to go find movies HE thought would work....we've been receiving a LOT of old classics....I'm not sure they're working but the troops seem much less inclined to complain when Daddy picks the movies. LOL I'm going to come back and check your suggestions.
