It is a victorian construction, despite its own delusions of french ancestry. It was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild (but not with his bare hands you understand!) to display his outstanding collection of art treasures and to entertain the fashionable world.
The house is fairy-tale like and quite impressive, but we didn't pay extra to go inside.
The grounds are quite lovely enough.
There are thousands of beautiful trees from around the world. Some have plaques at their base saying which, now long dead, European monarch planted them. (Though not with their bare hands, obviously.)
Autumn colours are still here, in Mid November.The grass is still so green too!

Ah - your photos of England make me smile! I may have to quit praying "God send us whereever you wish" and start putting in some fervent, specific requests.
Dorothy, it is just spectacular. I really can not imagine the type of wealth that must have existed to create this places...just astounding.

Debbie, Wasn't there a branch of the Rothschilds building great buildings in NYC at the time? They certainly seemed to be at it all over Europe.
