Compulsory Barbecue
We have to go to a work BBQ today. I wasn't particularly looking forward to it, since the kids and I don't know anyone there particularly. But this morning, I read the email which was sent to all in the office about it and now I'm really dreading it.
Instead of a gracious 'Welcome to our home. We want you all to have fun!' it was a list of rules, beginning with where we aren't allowed to park, that we're not to look behind the Wendy(play) House and ending with what we aren't supposed to wear and how to control our children. My IBS is starting already!
The only way I can cope with this is by making fun of it. Sorry, it's just a well-tested survival mechanism. When I'm nervous, I make jokes. So, I told Jamie we should write a Multiple Choice Quiz to take for everyone to do during the course of the afternoon. I think his boss will be very pleased with his initiative and he should expect a pay rise. What do you think?

b) frog costumes
c) pince-nez

6) How long at we supposed to be responsible for our children?
a) You mean *our* children?
b) Until their first misdemeanor
c) At all times
d) Until I've had my first bottle of wine and then it's every man for himself.
I can't wait.

I insist that you break rule #3 (claim public interest) and report to us *without delay* what it is that they have lurking behind the Wendy House.
Have a lovely afternoon ;-)

::snicker::
How unfortunate that they feel the need to write out all these rules. It would make me think that the planners have had some sort of problems in the past.
Makes me REALLY wonder what's behind the Wendy play house though . . .
We'll be looking forward to your follow up post, vbg.
Oh, I can't wait to hear how this turns out!
LOL This makes me really wish I was going. I'd behave, I promise.LOL
I hope the guinea pigs behaved themselves while cavorting in the neighbours' bedrooms, that your children looked good in their frog costumes and Jamie looked suitably handsome in his powdered wig. And, please, please tell me you looked behind the Wendy House!
What an odd invitation! I agree with Jackie; I hope you at least peaked behind the Wendy House. I can undestand letting folks know the best places to park but to tell grown adults what to wear (your dh is not in the military) and how to act; - yikes!

Jackie,
Of course, the first thing I did after getting there was to round up a group of the usual suspects for an expedition to the Wendy House. I told them I thought there might be a dead body round there. Jamie's very law-abiding colleagues were most reluctant to investigate with me. But I made them. It was just some electric power thingies, something to do with the pool? Perhaps that's where they punish children who 'pollute the pool'.
Kristine,
Oh they have problems alright.
Liz,
I was so anxious about ensuring my children did not 'pollute the pool' that it was hard to let my hair down and have fun. They also seemed to forget most of us are vegetarian. Burger buns and carrots sticks for us, then.
Lisa,
You can't expect me to believe that! {g}
Kathryn,
It sounds like you've been to one of their parties before!
Renee,
I agree that letting us know the best places to park would be helpful. Stating 'do not attempt to park in the close' went a little beyond that.
{sigh} It wasn't THAT painful, though I did have to listen to a lecture on why the only religion worth considering is Buddhism, because there are no rules and you can 'do your own thing'.
Oh goody! Can't wait to hear how this little party turns out. Do keep us posted. :)
Love the survey of questions.
NO rules and you can do your own thing??? Hopefully it wasn't the owner of the house encouraging this religion given the list of rules they sent out prior to the party!
I always feel bad when we ask one thing and that is please leave your shoes at the back door and make yourself comfortable! EGADS... if I had that many "issues" with having people over I hope I would plan a party at the park instead of putting people through all of that!
I am agreeing with everyone else that these folks are WEIRD! If you need a list of rules, you shouldn't be inviting people over.
But I do have a question - what is a Close and why should one not park there?
As a Buddhist can you do your own thing even in the pool and behind the Wendy House?
don't Buddhists *have* to be vegetarians???
Jackie
WAIT when did Jaimie join the military? ::snort:: Glad it turned out o.k. "mandatory fun" we call it.
