We were driving back to the Youth Hostel, after having visited Eyam Museum and learned way more about Bubonic Plague than we ever needed to, when we stumbled into this village's annual ceremony of Well Dressing.
The local dignitaries were all there, including the Member of Parliament and the vicar led an open air service (with a great Gospel message!) to the assembled visitors. There was WI cakes and tea in the churchyard, maypole dancing and the most elaborate pictures made from petals I've ever seen.
And no celebration 'Up North' is complete without a brass (or silver) band. And bunting. You have to have bunting.
The village has three 'wells', or springs, and each picture was taken from a Bible passage. This one was from Matthew 4 18-20.
Let's see if you can work this one out! {g} The local primary school children created it.
It seemed strange to be singing hymns, in the street, with total strangers, in front of these pictures.
But then again, somehow it didn't.

Those petal pictures are absolutely amazing! I know what you mean about singing hymns in the streets with strangers. :-) It sounds like a really neat ceremony.
